The DHA exam for medtechs: two laboratory papers, a 50% pass mark and a result with no score

The DHA exam for medtech from Dubai Health Authority's own documents: two 150-question papers, a 50% pass mark, Sheryan steps and a result with no score.

The DHA exam for medtech is two papers, not one. Dubai Health Authority sets a Medical Laboratory Technician exam and a Medical Laboratory Technologist exam, and Prometric runs both as computer-based tests. The title you apply for decides which one you sit.

This post sets out what DHA's own documents say about format, coverage, booking and results. It gives no fees, because DHA can change them. It also gives no pass rates, because none are published. Where we point you to a longer treatment, such as attempts, we link to it.

What is the DHA exam for medtech at a glance?

DHA's Medical Laboratory Technician and Medical Laboratory Technologist exams are each 150 questions in 3 hours, with a pass score of 50%. Both are multiple-choice, and DHA's assessment guideline for computer-based testing says its partner Prometric manages and runs them.

Technician Technologist
Questions 150 150
Time 3 hours, including registration and introduction 3 hours, including registration and introduction
Pass score 50% 50%
Format Multiple-choice, computer-based Multiple-choice, computer-based
Result Pass or Fail Pass or Fail

The figures are as published in that guideline. DHA also states that it may change the assessment content, the exam format or the pass score without updating the document, so read the current guideline before you commit to a plan.

What does each DHA paper cover?

The two DHA papers list different coverage, and the Technologist list is wider. The Technician list names safety and quality control, bacteriology, virology, immunology, parasitology, hematology, blood bank, biochemistry, hormones, urinalysis, mycology and immunology/serology.

The Technologist list names blood bank, urinalysis and body fluids, clinical chemistry, hematology, immunology and serology, histopathology and cytology, microbiology, laboratory operation, and patient safety and professionalism. Notice what the Technologist list adds: histo/cyto, laboratory operation, and patient safety and professionalism, none of which appear by name on the Technician list.

DHA publishes no weights for these lists. We therefore cannot tell you that blood bank is a certain percentage, and nobody else can honestly do so from DHA's documents. Treat every named area as examinable and weight your own review by where you are weakest.

If you are still deciding which title to apply for, read our guide to technician, technologist and specialist titles. It does not decide your classification, which is DHA's call.

How do you get from Sheryan to a Prometric seat?

You reach a Prometric seat through four steps, in order: a Sheryan account, your DHA Unique ID, an Eligibility ID, and a booking at prometric.com/DHA. The steps come from DHA's assessment guideline and its Manual for Professional Assessment.

Step What you do
1 Create your Sheryan account
2 Copy your DHA Unique ID
3 Generate your Eligibility ID in Sheryan
4 Book the exam at prometric.com/DHA using the Eligibility ID

The DHA manual adds two day-of rules. Arrive 30 minutes early, and make sure your passport name matches the name on your Sheryan account. A mismatch is the kind of problem that is cheap to fix a month out and expensive on the morning.

Our exam-day guide covers eligibility codes and check-in across authorities. We quote no fee here, so check the current amount in Sheryan.

Why is the 3-hour clock shorter than it looks?

DHA's three hours include registration, the process introduction and the exam content, so the time you spend answering is less than 180 minutes. DHA's guideline says this in so many words: the exam duration includes the registration, process introduction and exam content.

DHA does not say how long registration and the introduction take, and we will not guess. Plan as if your pace is faster than the 72 seconds an item you get from dividing 180 minutes by 150 questions. A comfortable margin is part of your strategy, and our time management guide shows checkpoints for a 150-item paper.

You can rehearse this in TerumoEdge Gulf MLS Ex-Sim, which we publish, so weigh this accordingly. Its Full Mock is 100 items in one blend, not a DHA paper, and its default clock of 150 minutes matches no authority. To train the 72-second pace, set the mock to 120 minutes.

What does the DHA result tell you?

DHA reports your result as Pass or Fail in your Sheryan account, and the applicant's score is not shared. The manual adds that the result is issued only by DHA through Sheryan, not by the test centre.

That has two consequences. First, you cannot learn which discipline cost you marks from the report. Second, no study app can tell you how close you were. After a fail, you diagnose from your own timed practice results by discipline, which is the approach our retake plan takes.

Nobody can honestly promise a pass either. DHA publishes no pass rates, and no claim about how many people pass is supportable from its documents. Rely on your timed results, not on anyone's prediction.

How many attempts do you get at the DHA exam?

DHA allows three attempts in total, with no set gap between assessment dates, subject to availability. Failing the third attempt blocks you from reapplying for a DHA licence for two years.

The manual allows three new attempts if you obtain an additional recognised qualification, or gain at least two years of clinical licensed experience after your last attempt. For any other exception, the DHA manual lists limited exceptions in sections 4.11 and 4.13; read them for your case.

The practical lesson is to treat the first attempt as a real attempt. Do not book to "see the paper". Our retake plan covers attempts for DHA and Qatar side by side, and our Gulf comparison shows how the authorities differ. Try the free 40-item demo before you book; it is unscored.

How does the DHA pass mark compare with other authorities?

The DHA pass score of 50% cannot be compared directly with other authorities, because each sets its own format. SCFHS publishes 55% for its technician papers, and Qatar's DHP publishes a 50% cut score for 150 MCQs in 3 hours. The SCFHS specialist exam is scored on a 200–800 scale.

A lower percentage does not make a paper easier. The questions, the coverage and the way a pass mark is set all differ, and no authority publishes pass rates. If you are choosing between Dubai and another authority, choose by where the job is and the title you are applying for, then read that authority's own guide.

You can check the neighbouring formats in SCFHS's technician blueprint and DHP's Qualifying Examination page. Our SCFHS guide covers the Saudi papers in full.

How should you prepare for a DHA paper?

Prepare for every area on your paper's coverage list, because DHA publishes no weights, and rehearse at a pace faster than 72 seconds an item. Start by printing the coverage list for your title and rating each area red, amber or green from your recent timed practice.

Then work the red areas first, in short timed sets, and read the explanation for every item you miss, including the ones you guessed right. A guessed hit hides a gap. Finish with at least two full-length rehearsals, the second one at your target pace.

Keep the logistics in the same plan. Check your passport name against Sheryan, generate your Eligibility ID early, and book a date that leaves a margin for any delay in your file. Rushing a booking to "get it done" spends one of your three attempts on a paper you are not ready for.

Frequently asked questions

What is the DHA passing score for medical laboratory technologists?

DHA publishes a pass score of 50% for both the Medical Laboratory Technologist and the Medical Laboratory Technician exams. DHA states it may change the content, format or pass score without updating the guideline, so confirm the figure in the current document before you book.

Will DHA tell me my score?

No. DHA's guideline says the applicant's score will not be shared. You see Pass or Fail in your Sheryan account, and the result is issued only by DHA, not by the test centre. To find weak areas, use your own timed practice results.

How many times can I take the DHA exam?

Three times in total. Failing the third attempt blocks reapplying for a DHA licence for two years. DHA allows three new attempts after an additional recognised qualification or at least two years of licensed clinical experience gained after your last attempt.

Should I sit the technician or the technologist paper?

Sit the paper that matches the title you are applying for. The coverage lists differ, with the Technologist list adding histo/cyto, laboratory operation, and patient safety and professionalism. DHA decides your title from your qualifications, so we make no eligibility claim here.
